Unleashing Your Literary Genius: A Comprehensive Guide to Earning Through Book and Ebook Publishing on Amazon

STARTING YOUR OWN ONLINE BUSINESS
Earning Money by Crafting and Selling Books and Ebooks on Amazon

If you love writing and want to earn some cash from it, why not consider creating and selling books or ebooks on Amazon? The landscape of self-publishing has transformed rapidly in recent years, thanks largely to platforms like Amazon. This platform offers a chance for anyone to become a published writer and earn money from their work, whether you’re just starting or already have an audience.

Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has redefined boundaries, making it easier and quicker for anyone to earn money as an author.

My experience is primarily in selling private label products on Amazon and not necessarily with books or ebooks. So I reached out to a seasoned Amazon author, Avery Breyer to gain some insights.

Avery first published her book in 2015, and currently, she has six books up for sale on Amazon, mainly concerning personal finance and money-making tips. She kindly agreed to share her experience and tips on selling books/ebooks on Amazon.

Avery is a well-known author, freelance writer, and real estate investor. She’s passionate about guiding people to manage their money better and to live their dream life. Avery has featured in numerous magazines and interviews, such as Woman’s World and Essence. Her popular “Smart Money Blueprint” series of books offers practical steps on money management.

If you want to know more about how to become a self-published author, you can check out the course “From First Draft to Bestseller: Self-Publish and Market a Book That Readers Will Love” by Jonathan LaPoma, a bestselling author and instructor. This comprehensive course is available on Skillshare.

In my conversation with Avery, she shared candid information that could assist you in deciding if becoming a self-published author is a good fit for you.

Avery’s journey to self-publishing began with the need to provide for her family while traveling the world full-time. She started with freelancing SEO writing on Upwork. However, due to her recurring eye problems, she wanted an income source that didn’t entirely depend on her actively working all the time. So she decided to explore writing and selling books/ebooks on Amazon, which seemed to solve her problem. After extensive research on self-publishing, she wrote and published her first book, “How to Stop Living Paycheck to Paycheck”, in March 2015.

As a first-time author with no prior experience, she found the support she needed in dedicated blogs and Facebook groups for self-publishing.

Selling on Amazon, Avery emphasizes, gives authors control over their book covers, content, and marketing. It’s just you, your readers, and Amazon.

How does Avery promote her books? She said it varies from year to year due to changes in Amazon’s algorithm and the book promotion landscape. Initially, she mostly promoted her books in newsletters such as Buck Books, but now she also uses Amazon ads extensively.

Can beginners succeed in self-publishing without an existing audience outside Amazon? Definitely yes, according to Avery. It does, however, require considerable hard work.

Avery owes her book’s multitude of reviews to her email list. She maintains a list of engaged subscribers and always makes it a point to ask them for unbiased reviews.

What are the crucial elements for success? Avery suggests writing the best book you can, preferably about subjects you are deeply knowledgeable about and can genuinely help people.

But she also acknowledges the reality that most book sales often drop off rapidly. Despite this, she has the experience of her books providing ongoing revenue; her first book remains successful even five years after being published.

Like every venture, self-publishing has its ups and downs. Avery confesses writing a book to be mentally draining, but the rewards make all the effort worthwhile. She loves to teach and interact with her readers, and self-publishing her books has allowed her this advantage.

In conclusion, if you’ve got a story or knowledge to share, don’t hesitate! Take the leap and become an author. Whether you make a lot from your first book or not, the experience you’ll gain will be priceless for your next project.
