Surprising Benefits for Active Kids

It’s widely recognized that children need to engage in regular physical activity. Activities like playing a classic game of street hockey are vital for developing strong bones, a healthy heart, and reducing the risk of various diseases linked to excess weight.

But the advantages of exercise extend beyond just physical health. Children who participate in the recommended one hour of daily physical activity experience a range of benefits that enhance their performance both academically and socially.

In fact, active children tend to:

  • Achieve higher grades.
  • Demonstrate improved concentration.
  • Develop better conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
  • Exude greater confidence.
  • Show increased creativity.

Encouraging Kids to Stay Active

While it’s important for kids to have some downtime, many Canadian kids aren’t getting enough physical activity. This school year, consider incorporating some energizing activities into their routine.

  • Boost your children’s morning energy by walking them to school.
  • Involve them in raking leaves (and jumping in them) or shoveling snow (and having fun in it afterwards).
  • Organize a dance-off where the most spirited dancer wins!
  • Plan active playdates with other parents, allowing kids to enjoy splashes in the pool or laser tag games with friends.
  • Encourage them to join a team sport.

On average, children spend up to seven hours a day in front of screens, whether it’s computers or other devices. While many children need access to technology for schoolwork, it’s advisable for parents to limit screen time.

The Canadian Paediatric Society recommends that children under the age of two should avoid screen time entirely, and that school-aged children should have no more than two hours of recreational screen time daily.
