She suggests aspiring transcriptionists should be able to type 70 wpm but emphasized that aside from typing, mastery in English grammar and punctuation is crucial. Formal degrees are not necessary; however, proficiency in English, comfort with word processing software, and transcription software will come in handy.

An easy way to find work in this field would be online searches and applications on transcription work websites. With no prior experience, one could find work but pay may be lower than expected.

Transcribing jobs are generally flexible. Transcriptionists are self-employed, allowing them to choose the volume of work they want to take up.

While medical transcription jobs are near obsolete, the demand for general and legal transcription is growing. Almost all industries have a place for general transcription, with legal transcription gaining scope too.

Pay rates for transcription jobs are determined per line or per audio minute. Beginners can expect to make around $15 an hour, with the potential to grow as skills improve.
