As we transition into a new year, I’d like to share a poignant quote from Suleika Jaouad’s memoir, Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted (highly recommended; it’s a truly touching read).

He posits a theory: When we embark on a journey, we actually experience three distinct trips. The first is the journey of preparation and anticipation—packing bags and daydreaming about the adventure ahead. The second is the actual trip itself. Finally, there’s the trip that lives on in our memories. “The trick is to keep all three as distinct as possible,” he advises. “The key is to be fully present in the moment, wherever you find yourself.” This wisdom particularly resonates with me.

Studies from the Institute for Applied Positive Research suggest that simply having a trip in the itinerary can boost happiness:

– 97% of respondents agree that planning a trip enhances their mood.
– 82% feel that a booked trip significantly boosts their happiness.
– 71% report increased energy levels when they know a trip is on the horizon within the next six months.

This season often evokes a blend of experiences—nostalgically recalling trips with grown children or loved ones who are no longer with us, cherishing the present moments spent with close friends, and starting to map out that exciting journey for 2026. It serves as a wonderful reminder to savor every aspect of life.
