How I Turned YouTube into My Full-Time Job at 24
By Ryan Scribner

Here’s my story: I used to work a standard 9 to 5 job after finishing college. I was employed as a planner at a local power company, where I handled blueprints and cost estimates for overhead utilities. It was considered the dream job by many: I was part of a union, making over $60,000 annually at the age of 20, and had a secure pension waiting for me at retirement. Still, for me, it wasn’t quite right.

I was faced with a 45-minute commute every day and was limited to only two weeks of vacation per year, which is why I found myself dreaming of something different on my way home from work one day. I wanted a job that offered time freedom, location independence, and the possibility to work on something I was passionate about.

Lo and behold, my YouTube channel eventually offered everything I was looking for. After two years at my 9 to 5 job, I called it quits to focus on what I genuinely loved. While I indeed put in long hours, it felt like retirement to me because I was finally in charge of my own time and truly enjoyed my work.

Fast forward to a few years later, my channel is thriving. I started an investing blog as well, and last time I checked, I had crossed the 500,000-subscriber mark on YouTube. With a consistent record of getting at least one million views monthly, I’m able to live comfortably through ad revenue and other income streams.

But why would you care, you might ask?

Because three years ago, I was just your average guy with a typical office job, and I managed to make a successful transition to working from home, entirely on my terms. That suggests it can be just as possible for you to do the same thing. The growth of my channel isn’t based on luck but rather a straightforward yet effective strategy which I’d like to share with you.

The key is to find a specific niche, stick to it, and build expertise in that area. Your audience will grow to see you as an authority on the topic, and this credibility can be invaluable.

Ads may be a tempting source of income for your YouTube channel, but be careful not to depend on them because views can fluctuate greatly. It’s safer to have multiple income streams, by exploring options like sponsored videos, affiliate marketing, and selling digital products. That way, even a less fruitful month in ad revenue won’t spell disaster.

I initially launched my channel as a part-time hobby while working my regular job—a journey that took me just over two years. My advice to anyone considering leaving their job to start something like YouTube, make sure you have proof of concept and are seeing results before you make the jump.

Content strategy also plays a major role in YouTube success. It’s not enough to create videos you assume people would be interested in. You have to do your market research, find out what people are searching for, and create content that fills that demand.

In retrospect, starting my YouTube channel and blog is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. If you’re thinking about starting your own channel, blog, or podcast, my advice to you is simple: just go for it. All you need is to start, stay consistent, and focus on the right things.
