Navigating the fluctuations of chronic pain can be incredibly challenging. It’s a complex and intensely personal journey, where some days feel like relentless waves crashing down, while on others, it seems like I’m merely treading water. This is a reality I have directly faced.
In May 2024, my medical team diagnosed me with a benign neuroendocrine tumor in my spinal canal after over 17 months of enduring pain. What I initially assumed was a herniated disc was misdiagnosed for more than a year, leading to intensifying discomfort. It felt as though I was perpetually submerged, battling for even a hint of relief.
My ability to pick up my daughters or engage in play was severely limited; walking and standing became increasingly difficult due to nerve compression. I found myself sleeping in a recliner in my living room each night, as it was the only place where I could manage some semblance of comfort long enough to drift off. My mind remained alert, yet my body was betraying me.
Understanding the Nuances of Pain
Conditions like fibromyalgia, arthritis, and herniated discs contribute to a long and diverse list of chronic ailments. Without effective treatment, the pain from these conditions can disrupt various facets of life, affecting everything from work to social engagements and family interactions.
The multifaceted nature of chronic pain often requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. By integrating alternative therapies with traditional medical practices, we can forge a personalized path towards improved comfort, balance, and holistic wellness.
“Alternative therapies take a holistic approach instead of merely addressing symptoms, which can support overall well-being—mind, body, and spirit,” explains Lyn Sakari, a certified sound ceremonialist and meditation teacher.
