At 58, Jo Stokes began facing menopause symptoms like hot flashes, weight gain, sleep disturbances, headaches, itchy skin, and swollen ankles. Initially, she sought relief through prescription hormone replacement therapy (HRT) gel, but it only exacerbated her discomfort.
After attending a seminar on menopause in the workplace, Stokes decided to explore homeopathy. Although she was initially doubtful, her skepticism faded as, within just a month of treatment, her hot flashes and swollen ankles vanished, and her other symptoms began to diminish.
“The terrible headaches I used to experience every two weeks stopped immediately when I started the medication,” Stokes recalls. “I had endured these issues for so long that I was astonished to find that within just a few days, they simply disappeared!”

Humble Beginnings
Homeopathy, developed in Germany over 200 years ago, is based on two fundamental principles: “like cures like,” indicating that a remedy is derived from a substance that would cause similar symptoms in a healthy person, and the “law of minimum dose,” which suggests that smaller doses can yield stronger effects.
Pat Deacon, RSHom, HMC, has over 30 years of experience practicing homeopathy in the UK and Canada, offering her services via Zoom. Her journey began when she sought a remedy for her son’s eczema, which escalated to asthma. After conventional treatments failed, they turned to a homeopath, leading to significant physical and emotional improvements.
“I realized that this form of medicine not only alleviates physical health issues but can also profoundly enhance emotional well-being,” Deacon shares. “I wanted to be part of that change.”
Throughout her career, Deacon has supported patients at various life stages, with many clients now in their 60s or older. She addresses a range of issues, including menopause, depression, arthritis, allergies, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, and compromised immune systems due to chemotherapy.

Simpler Solutions
Deacon highlights the many advantages of homeopathy, particularly its ability to reduce or eliminate patients’ reliance on conventional medications, thereby avoiding the side effects and expenses associated with pharmaceuticals. Typically, homeopathic remedies are prescribed in liquid or pill form, costing between $6 to $20 each.
Natural menopause expert and homeopath Sarah Davison, BSc (Hom), LCHE, DipPsych, emphasizes a common misconception that homeopathy revolves around herbs and supplements. Instead, she clarifies, it uses natural substances, which are “potentized” through dilution and agitation, resulting in a remedy that stimulates the body’s innate healing processes.
“Since it’s your system healing itself, there are no adverse effects,” Davison explains. Homeopathic treatments follow a structured process of consultations leading to personalized prescriptions that address your symptoms, root causes, and individual identity.
Deacon also points out that homeopathy’s simplicity makes it eco-friendly, requiring fewer resources than traditional pharmaceuticals.

Hopeful Outcomes
As a child, Deacon perceived aging as a constant cycle of doctor’s visits. “It seemed like my parents were perpetually caught in a whirlwind of appointments and procedures,” she recalls.
In contrast to conventional medicine that often concentrates on symptoms, homeopathy focuses on enhancing the quality of life to make it as vibrant and fulfilling as possible. “Homeopathy instills life in people,” remarks Deacon.
Furthermore, for individuals with autoimmune issues, homeopathy provides a glimmer of hope: while traditional medications may suppress symptoms, homeopathy aims at addressing the underlying causes of the condition.
Some ailments, which may not fit neatly into conventional medicine’s categories, can still be effectively treated with homeopathy by targeting their root causes. Research supports this approach; a 2019 observational study involving 50 rheumatoid arthritis patients found encouraging results with personalized homeopathic treatments.
Another study indicated that Bach flower remedy cream, developed by homeopath Edward Bach, effectively eased symptoms and pain associated with mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome.

First Steps
If you’re considering homeopathy for your own health, Davison suggests starting with free “curiosity calls” with homeopaths you may be interested in. There is no need to limit your search to local practitioners; “I provide treatment to clients all over the globe,” she notes.
Additionally, she encourages looking into educational opportunities, such as the free online Home Prescriber course offered by the Centre for Homeopathic Education (https://www.cheonline.co.uk/the-home-prescriber-course).
