Quick Guide to Making Money from Selling Your Old Furniture
Updated on April 7, 2023
Ever think about making some extra cash out of your old furniture? Whether you’re organizing a big move, sprucing up your space, or just trying to declutter, selling your used furniture can be a handy way to recoup some of your expenses.
My family recently had to let go of a bunch of furniture because we were moving to a smaller place. We decided to list our items online and ended up making a hefty $1,525 in just two weeks. We’d rather have someone else use these pieces than let them go to waste, so we were delighted with the results.
Here’s a rundown of what we sold and the prices we scored:
– Secretary’s Desk – $300
– Office Desk – $175
– Set of 3 Bar Stools – $125
– Old Kitchen Table + 2 chairs – $20
– Old Desk – $20
– Three Patio Furniture Sets – $455 total
– Papasan Chair and Footrest – $50
– Several Decorative Indoor/Outdoor Plants (real) – $75 total
– Outdoor Wood Bench – $10
– Microfiber Futon – $35
– Buffet Cabinet $65
– TV Stand – $50
– Love Seat – $100
– Kid’s Table and 2 Chairs – $15
– 40-Inch Indoor Trampoline – $25
In each case, the buyer came to pick up the item from us. Some items didn’t sell, but we chose to keep them and use them at our new home instead of settling for less than what we wanted.
Most items sold through Facebook Marketplace, although Craigslist did help us sell our most expensive items. Unfortunately, we did encounter a few scammers on Craigslist so it’s crucial to be cautious and identify red flags. Despite such mishaps, we also had some unreliable potential buyers from Facebook who’d bail out at the last minute.
Selling your used furniture may seem daunting but here are few tips based on our experience:
1. Research Your Items and Prices: You need to know the value of the items you’re trying to sell. Spend some time studying similar furniture listings on online marketplaces.
2. Click Good Photos: Clean, well-lit photographs from different angles greatly improve your chances of selling an item.
3. Use Effective Keywords: Think about what potential buyers are likely to search for and use those keywords in your listing.
4. Be Honest About the Condition: Always describe the condition of your furniture as accurately as possible.
5. Set Your Minimum Price: You should know your minimum acceptable price ahead of time because negotiation is common in selling used items.
6. Respond Promptly: Quick responses hold potential buyer’s interest and improve your chances of making a sale.
7. Try Multiple Listing Places: If an item isn’t selling, consider using different online marketplaces.
8. Avoid Holding Items: Unless they’ve already paid, refrain from holding back items for potential buyers.
9. Have Options: Don’t solely rely on one person until they’ve purchased. Keep contacting other interested buyers as a backup plan.
10. Be Patient: Higher-priced items or items for which you aren’t very flexible on price may need more time to sell.
In conclusion, selling used furniture can be a practical and eco-friendly way to declutter while making some extra cash. With some careful planning and patience, you could turn your unwanted possessions into a profitable side gig.
