Easy Guide to Check and Correct Errors on Your Credit Report
Your credit score is like a financial report card. It impacts many things such as loan approvals, interest rates, renting a house or apartment, and even applying for jobs. It’s derived from the details of your credit report. Therefore, keeping a good score matters.
Checking your credit report regularly is a financially healthy habit. It ensures accuracy and helps ward off identity theft. But if you’re not credit-savvy, the report may seem a bit confusing. Don’t worry, this guide will explain how to get, check, and correct your report if needed.
##How to Get Your Free Credit Report
Federal law allows you to get a free copy of your credit report once per year. To get it, just visit AnnualCreditReport.com. Here, you’ll get a report from each of the three big credit bureaus – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. You can either get all three at once or request them one by one.
All your reports from the three bureaus might not look the same as not all lenders report to all three. If it’s been a while since you reviewed your credit, it might be helpful to get reports from all three right away.
Note: While you can see your credit report, this won’t include your credit score. I’ll explain shortly how to get that for free.
To request your free report, you’ll need to input details like your name, date of birth, social security number, current and previous addresses. Following validation, your report will be ready for download. Save it or print a copy for review.
##Get Your Free Credit Score
For the complete financial picture, you’ll need both your credit report and your credit score. Don’t stress, getting your score is also easy and free via Credit Karma. Simply sign up for a free account and get notified about important changes to your credit report. Take note that while Credit Karma offers basic credit monitoring, you’ll still need to get your full report from AnnualCreditReport.com.
##Checking Your Credit Report
Once you’ve downloaded it, there are several things to look for in your credit report:
1. **Personal Information**: Double-check details like your name, address, social security number, and phone number for accuracy.
2. **Account Ownership**: Confirm that all the accounts listed, even those noted as closed, belong to you.
3. **Payment History**: Validate your payment history to avoid any discrepancies.
4. **Account Balances**: Inspect all balances and confirm they seem about right.
5. **Credit Limits**: Verify the credit limit on each of your accounts.
6. **Account Status**: Check that the status of each account is accurately reported.
7. **Public Records**: Public records may signify bankruptcies, judgments, tax liens, or lawsuits, and could greatly impact your score. So be sure they’re correct.
8. **Credit Inquiries**: Verify that the companies checking your credit are ones you recognize. These inquiries can stay on your report for two years.
If you come across any inaccuracies, it’s vital to report them. You’ll need to contact the bureaus that have reported this error. If the error appears on reports from all three bureaus, you’ll have to contact each of them separately.
To file a dispute, simply visit their websites and follow the required steps.
Here are the dispute pages for each bureau:
– Equifax
– Experian
– TransUnion
