Transitioning your skin care routine can be challenging. While we’ve moved past the harshest winter weather, we’re not yet basking in the warmth of summer sunshine. Our skin might still show signs of winter’s toll, but like the changing seasons, with a little love and the right natural skin care products, we can transform our complexion from dull to radiant.
Exfoliate from Head to Toe
To combat dry, flaky skin, it’s essential to exfoliate regularly. However, moderation is key—limit exfoliation to a few times a week, especially if your skin is sensitive or prone to allergies.
Face
Facial exfoliants come in two varieties, and neither is superior; rather, you should choose based on your specific skin needs:
- Physical exfoliants contain tiny beads that rely on friction to eliminate dead skin cells. Avoid synthetic plastic beads, as they can harm aquatic ecosystems. Opt for mild scrubs made with natural ingredients like sugar, oatmeal, or nourishing jojoba beads.
- Chemical exfoliants use naturally derived acids to gently dissolve dry, scaly skin. Alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), often sourced from fruits, is a common choice. If you try these, start with a lower concentration and remember to protect your skin from the sun, as it may heighten sensitivity.
Lips
To treat flaky, chapped lips, consider a gentle exfoliation. Search for a natural lip scrub at health food stores or create your own by mixing natural cane sugar, honey, and vegetable oil (like coconut or olive oil). Massage the mixture onto your lips using a facecloth or your finger, and then apply a natural lip balm to seal in moisture.
Body and Feet
Many natural retailers offer sugar or salt-based body scrubs. During your shower, gently massage the scrub all over your skin, paying special attention to dry areas like knees, toes, and elbows. Depending on your preference for intensity, you can use a bath mitt, loofah, or washcloth for application.
Another effective method is dry brushing. Use a natural bristle body brush and make long, sweeping strokes toward your heart to remove dead skin and stimulate circulation before showering.
Don’t forget to moisturize after exfoliating! This is crucial for protecting your skin barrier, locking in hydration, and preventing dryness that could undo your exfoliation efforts.
Lighten Up!
The cold, dry winter air can deplete our skin of moisture, prompting us to use heavier products. With the arrival of spring, it’s time to lighten up on our skincare.
Remember, specialized products like eye creams typically don’t require seasonal adjustments.
Moisturizer
If you relied on a thicker cream during winter, consider switching to a lighter lotion for spring. Likewise, if your skin is oily or acne-prone and you used a light lotion in winter, explore spring and summer options that are even more lightweight and gel-like. Many skincare brands offer a variety of moisturizers catering to different skin types, making it easy to find the perfect fit.
Makeup
As the temperature rises, it’s time to swap heavy foundations for lighter alternatives. Consider a tinted moisturizer or a natural BB (beauty balm) crème or CC (colour correcting) crème. These versatile products offer a similar texture to tinted moisturizers while providing benefits like priming, smoothing, and anti-aging.
Revive Your Hair!
Just like our skin, winter can leave our hair dry and damaged.
When selecting a shampoo, avoid sodium lauryl sulfate, a common foaming agent that can irritate the skin. Instead, nourish your hair and scalp with gentle, natural shampoos, and follow up with a rich conditioner.
For extra care, use a leave-in conditioner a few times a week, and apply hair oil before styling. Just remember to be gentle with heat styling tools, as excessive heat can be harsh on your hair.
Spring Clean Your Cosmetics
When was the last time you refreshed your cosmetics stash? Now is the perfect opportunity!
- Check the expiration: Cosmetics usually have a marked expiry date. If not, remember how long you’ve had the product. Generally, it’s best to use products within a year, but discard them sooner if you notice any changes in smell, appearance, or texture.
- Clean your tools: Makeup brushes can harbor bacteria if not cleaned regularly. Look for natural brush cleaners at health stores or use gentle castile soap with water.
- Assess your collection: Take inventory of what you have and identify any gaps. Before replacing everything, ask yourself important questions about unused products. Were they inconvenient, not your color, or ineffective for your skin? Once you identify your needs, make a shopping list and head to your local health retailer!
Watch Out for Allergies in Warmer Weather
If you’re prone to skin allergies, the warmer months may bring challenges. Sweating can trigger hives, while heat can aggravate conditions like eczema, and seasonal allergies or asthma can lead to skin irritation.
For those who suffer from seasonal allergies or skin issues such as eczema, prepare accordingly: consult with a healthcare professional about your symptoms and keep your natural remedies handy, just in case.
