Empowerment for girls is vital! The future is indeed female. As a mother of two teenage daughters, I celebrate the societal shifts that champion equality and safety. The groundbreaking #MeToo and Time’s Up movements are illuminating issues of harassment and discrimination, enabling girls and women to embrace their strength and power fully. Hooray!
But what about our boys?
It’s essential for boys to develop into well-rounded, healthy, and sensitive men who understand their role in society while treating everyone with respect. Unfortunately, many boys are surrounded by messages of sexism, homophobia, and violence against women, leading to emotional desensitization.

Addressing Emotional Vulnerability
Boys often face immense pressure to forge a tough, dominant persona while shying away from showing empathy, warmth, or sensitivity—traits labeled as feminine. These stereotypes harm them by denouncing emotional openness, promoting the idea that showing feelings or crying is a weakness to overcome.
The societal demand for unyielding strength can lead boys to suppress their emotions. Given that experiencing vulnerability is a significant aspect of life, this can hinder their development of emotional intelligence.
Consequences of Emotional Suppression
Suppressing emotions may lead to stress, mental health issues, weight gain, and even digestive problems. Moreover, emotional isolation can increase the risk of serious health issues, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, obesity, and depression. Boys and young men of color are particularly susceptible to the detrimental effects of toxic stress.
Everyday Strategies to Manage Stress:
- Maintain a balanced diet
- Engage in regular exercise
- Spend time in nature
- Connect with friends and family
- Practice breathing techniques
- Establish healthy pre-bedtime routines, keeping electronics out of the bedroom

Redefining Masculinity
Fortunately, cultural narratives can be reshaped. However, the term “toxic masculinity” may not be the best catalyst for this change. Many argue that labeling an entire gender negatively only breeds shame and judgment, which are counterproductive to lasting reform. It’s unlikely that labeling masculinity as harmful will shift outdated perspectives, especially among adolescent boys.
Fostering Kindness in Boys
- Guide boys to recognize and express their emotions.
- Promote kindness and compassion amongst friends.
- Challenge traditional stereotypes related to toys and clothing.
- Model empathy and address the notion that “kids are cruel.”
- Expose boys to diverse expressions of masculinity.
- Discuss the importance of treating others respectfully.
- Show how to acknowledge mistakes.
- Encourage physical activities to help process thoughts and feelings.
- Discipline respectfully, avoiding shaming actions.
- Create a family environment where emotional sharing is encouraged.

What Effective Strategies Exist?
According to Barry MacDonald, Canadian author of Boys on Target (Mentoring Press, 2010), it is entirely feasible to raise boys into caring, courageous, and ethical men.
MacDonald emphasizes the importance of fostering boys’ intimacy and connection skills alongside traditional masculine traits. He believes it’s possible for boys to embody both strength and emotional complexity.
Empowering Teenage Boys 2.0
- Invite boys to participate in cooking or meal prep.
- Model calm and assertive conflict resolution.
- Discuss popular song lyrics to explore their meanings.
- Engage openly about consent and its importance.
- Share opinions about violence in video games and movies.
- Talk about the significance of Pink Shirt Day.
- Encourage walking and discussing feelings of anger or frustration.
- Reiterate that verbal or physical violence has no place in relationships.
- Acknowledge teenagers’ desire for acceptance while inspiring them to think independently.
Beyond Binary Gender Norms
Amid societal pressures to conform to traditional gender roles, many individuals recognize that gender is complex and encompasses a multitude of identities beyond binary definitions.
Non-binary individuals may identify with characteristics of both genders or neither exclusively.
Building Connections
An ideal life combines emotional intelligence with resilience and bravery. Successful individuals articulate feelings, display empathy, collaborate, and resolve conflicts amicably.
By nurturing boys’ sensitive sides, we bolster their emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and self-acceptance. This fosters effective communication that attracts collaboration and love.
Embrace and Celebrate Diversity
When we support our boys in adopting practices that enhance their personal growth, we pave the way for a brighter, healthier, and safer future. Celebrating the vast array of masculinities fosters vibrant, balanced, and compassionate communities. Hooray!
