My 100-pound (45 kg) weight loss journey.
Six years ago, I decided to prioritize my health and well-being—not only for myself but for my children. My goal was to feel whole, confident, and beautiful.
However, I found that I struggled with feelings of inadequacy and anxiety. I looked thinner but older. Was this what health looked like? Why didn’t losing weight resolve all my issues as I had hoped?
Now, my approach to health and beauty focuses on nurturing my inner self. In the past, I believed I could only work on one aspect at a time. I’ve since realized that true change requires inner reflection before any outward transformation. Here are several strategies—some practical and others more philosophical—that I’m exploring to foster my inner beauty.

1. Reassess your self-image

The foundation of beauty lies in our self-perception. Overcoming negative thoughts can be challenging, but it is the critical first step in transforming how we view ourselves.
Factors influencing self-perception are numerous, as discussed in this article. Ultimately, it’s a mental challenge. Practice daily affirmations and kindness to yourself, and you’ll likely see a shift in how you perceive yourself.

2. Clean up your news feed

Often, we spend hours scrolling through social media, consuming the polished versions of others’ lives. This can foster feelings of inadequacy and what I like to call a “social media hangover.” At some point, we forgot that we can control our feed.
Be mindful when scrolling. If you’re feeling down, jealous, or drained, it’s time to clean out your feed. Unfollow accounts that trigger negative emotions, and instead, follow those that uplift you and support your mental well-being.

3. Exercise for enjoyment, not just aesthetics

Many of us view exercise solely as a means to build muscle or lose weight. While those benefits often result from physical activity, they shouldn’t be the central focus. Exercise should be about enjoying the feeling of movement.
Physical activity releases endorphins, which enhance your mood and overall sense of beauty. Even if you’re not an exercise enthusiast (and I can relate!), we can all agree that feeling good afterward is the goal!

4. Prioritize restorative sleep

We often hear about the benefits of sleep, but does it actually contribute to beauty? Absolutely! Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep per night for optimal recovery and rejuvenation. Even just an additional hour can significantly improve your appearance.
Getting enough rest can reduce wrinkles, dark circles, and dry skin while enhancing your natural glow.

5. Make intentional dietary choices

From reducing wrinkles to achieving a sun-kissed glow, the right foods can do wonders for our appearance. Avoid the trap of diet culture focused on calories and macros. Instead, recognize the beauty-enhancing properties of whole foods.
For example, avocados may aid in UV protection for your skin, while walnuts can help reduce inflammation. Sweet potatoes and carrots are packed with beta-carotene, which can warm up your complexion. Vitamins C and E are essential for protecting against sun damage and maintaining healthy collagen levels—key for youthful skin.

6. Consider incorporating collagen

Let’s talk about collagen—the trending ingredient in skincare! A daily spoonful of collagen is believed to have beneficial effects on our skin, hair, and nails.
As the body’s most abundant protein, collagen provides structure and connective support to tissues. Supplements derived from various animal sources may improve skin elasticity and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles. 7. Embrace beauty vitamins

Biotin, or vitamin B7, is another supplement you’ve probably seen in health stores. It is found in foods such as organ meats, egg yolks, fish, sunflower seeds, sweet potatoes, and almonds.
Known for its potential benefits for hair, skin, and nails, biotin supplementation can help combat issues like rashes, thinning hair, and brittle nails. Just remember, biotin can influence certain lab tests, so notify your healthcare provider if you’re taking it before undergoing any testing.

8. Prioritize probiotics and prebiotics

Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that contribute to gut and overall health. Prebiotics are what these good bacteria consume. Together, they support various bodily functions, including skin health. Studies suggest that they can help combat acne and protect against sun damage. While research is ongoing, it’s clear that a healthy gut can promote healthier skin!
Recently, I’ve been integrating a prebiotic/probiotic blend into my diet through a beauty powder. After a couple of weeks, I noticed a visible glow in my skin, and a persistent rash on my chest resolved—an incredible transformation from such a small change.

9. Believe in your worthiness!

You are a remarkable, living being. Do you recognize that? Do you truly feel it?
Take time to honor your body today. Reflect on the journey you’ve traveled and how your beauty has transformed over time. Once you accept that you are deserving of a beautiful life and reflect, the change doesn’t lie purely in the outward appearance but in the perception of it. True transformation begins within; without recognizing your worth, no amount of beauty products or wellness strategies can help you experience it.
